Springfield Armory Hellion “Low Capacity” Option

Springfield Armory has released a “Low Capacity” Hellion option. The Hellion is, of course, their 5.56mm bullpup-style rifle. This is the same weapon, just shipped with a state-compliant” Magpul 10-round magazine. Hopefully, they won’t be necessary for too long in California. Unfortunately, this will remain necessary in several states no matter what happens in California.

You could augment the Springfield Hellion low-capacity bullpup with a Promag 10-rounder or a Lancer 10-rounder and get some color variety in your mag pouches.

10 Round Springfield Armory Hellion

The 10-round Hellion is, as Springfield explains, ideal for “restrictive locales.” You’ll still get all the maneuverability benefits and compactness of the Hellion; you’ll just have to reload more often.

The Hellion is a short, modular, fully ambidextrous bullpup platform based on the Croatian armed forces VH-2. The latter weapon has been proven in the field in a number of places on a couple of continents. The former has proven extremely popular despite being Springfield Armory’s first production gun in this configuration.

A bullpup has several advantages, though these must be weighed against potential disadvantages presented by an unfamiliar manual of arms. Bullpups are designed with the action and magazine well behind the trigger, back almost to the buttstock. For instance, this allows you to retain a 16-inch barrel while significantly shortening the weapon’s overall length.

However, one of this bullpup’s best features is its reversibility and ambidexterity. It features an ejection system that can be reversed without additional parts or tools and a full suite of ambi controls (safety, charging handle, magazine release, bolt release). It also sports a five-position collapsible buttstock and dual-position adjustable gas system.

"Springfield's
Springfield’s Hellion is based on the Croat VHS-2 bullpup. One of those can be seen here carried by a member of Cameroon’s Bataillon d’Intervention Rapide (BIR). BIR personnel work closely with US, Israeli, and other national SOF troops, particularly against elements of Boko Haram.

Steve Kramer, Springfield Armory’s Vice President of Marketing, says, “The semi-automatic Hellion builds upon the solid foundation of the Croatian VHS-2 and adapts it to the needs of American shooters. And now, with the 10-round version, it’s available to an even broader range of shooters.”

Gun DIY Tools from Real Avid: Check ’em out at NRAAM

Real Avid will be one of just many manufacturers at the 2023 National Rifle Association Annual Meeting, but they’ll probably be the only ones at booth #3263. We’re reliably told (because they told us) the company will have a bunch of workbenches and displays set up so their staff can showcase some of the many Real Avid tools and innovative weapon maintenance solutions.

One of those will be their new “Smart Assist Accessory System.” Described as a “plug and play” hands-free accessory system, it’s a pretty ingenious way to magnify and/or illuminate your gun DIY, gunsmithing, or reloading efforts.

The Smart Assist Accessory System unit has four pieces:

  • A docking station.
  • Five (5) inch magnifying glass (on flexible mount).
  • 180-lumen work light (on flexible mount).
  • Cell phone holder (again, on a flexible mount).
If you’re just doing some cleaning and you know what you’re doing—put on something entertaining. But if you’re not sure just where the hell that spring goes or how that thingamawhatsit comes apart, pull a tutorial video up on your phone.

The system apparently also works with their Master Gun Station and Master Gun Vise.

Real Avid describes the Smart Assist Accessory System as the “most advanced, and comprehensive firearm bench tool ever designed for cleaning, modifying and maintaining shotguns and rifles. Its fully adjustable design accommodates nearly all long guns, and the system includes storage options for chemicals, brushes, jags and cleaning rods.”

Sure, there are other options out there, but this is a pretty organized setup, built specifically for firearms maintenance, designed by a company in the firearms “battlespace.” That latter point is something to keep in mind if you’re considering a cheap Amazon Prime option instead.

An overview of the SAAS system - parts, pieces, and connections.
An overview of the SAAS—parts, pieces, and connections. It seems like this could also be a handy system for working on small automotive parts or other workbench-type efforts that might otherwise leave you cussing like your dad used to while you were holding the flashlight.

At the range and especially in the mountains, keeping your pack-out simple is huge. Opportunities to fill your tag can come quickly, but advanced ballistic solutions often require a lot of scrambling between pieces of gear. Vortex states that this is their top-tier
laser rangefinder that’s had an onboard GeoBallistics app added to it (among other things). The ballistic app allows users to create custom rifle profiles and includes features such as a heads-up display, ballistic reference charts, interactive mapping, and a Comp tab to create and save range cards. That means you can create accurate shooting solutions with simply and with relative speed. The Razor HD 4000 GB also has Bluetooth connection capability with Kestrel devices with the use of the GeoBallistics app. These features work together to give shooters stellar capabilities in a single, well-made device.

Ballistics Mode (BAL)). Built-in environmental sensors for temperature, pressure, and humidity work with the app solver, two wind modes, patented Vortex Wind Bearing Capture Mode, and Full Crosswind Mode to make the best of whatever shooting situation arises. This rangefinder is tripod adaptable, and water, fog, and shockproof.

Ruger ReadyDot: Micro-Reflex Sight System

Ruger is a manufacturer known for their dedication to quality and the creation of purposeful firearms. The latest from Ruger is a bit of a twofer: the Ruger ReadyDot Micro Reflex Optic and the company’s Max-9 with the ReadDot installed at the factory. That means whether you want only the dot or a gun with the dot in place, you’re covered.

Ruger ReadyDot

The Ruger ReadyDot is made to be an easy-to-use micro-reflex sight system capable of co-witnessing when used on Ruger’s MAX-9. Of course, it also fits compact handguns with Shield RMSc footprints, so the options are basically endless. The dot’s profile and shape are meant to facilitate fast target acquisition and superior compatibility with daily carry guns. It has a fiber-illuminated reticle that automatically adjusts to light conditions and, perhaps best of all, is specifically designed for battery-free operation at average concealed carry distances.

It’s a 1X reflex sight fixed in both elevation and windage with a 15 MOA, highly visible dot built on a simple, straightforward platform, and it’s meant to be user-friendly.

The ReadyDot ships with a T10 Torx Wrench and a pair of M4x0.7 8mm screws so it can be readily installed on a Ruger Max-9. Please note that screw specifications, adaptor plates, and mounts do vary between different models of optics-ready pistols. Glock 28 Coming to US Market

After over two decades, the Glock 28 is finally coming to the American market, thanks in part to TALO Distributors. TALO is a wholesale buying group that worked with Glock to bring the .380 ACP chambered Glock 28 to the US market, thanks to Glock’s manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Georgia.

Similar in size to the 9mm Glock 26, the Glock 28 was previously ineligible for import into the US based on the point system that is required for pistol imports. The system awarded points based on several criteria points, such as caliber and size. For around 26 years, the G28 was a rarity in America with only a few stateside probably from law enforcement department purchases. But that changes now.

TALO Distributors worked with Glock to bring the .380 ACP Glock 28 to the US market. For nearly three decades, Americans couldn’t get the .380 G28, but thanks to Glock’s plant in Georgia, they soon can. With a 3.4″ barrel and weighing just over 20 ounces, the lower recoiling G28 should be a solid contender in the sub-compact concealed carry market without much effort. (Photo credit: TALO)

The newly available Glock 28 pistol is a double stack sub-compact that looks like the 9mm Glock 26. It appears to have the same frame size as the Glock 26, with only a slightly different barrel beveling and look. With the .380 ACP caliber, shooters will experience lower recoil making it easier to control for more accurate shooting.

The 3.4” barreled Glock 28 weighs an ounce less than the G26, at just 20.64 ounces unloaded. With a shared frame size with the G26, it looks like the G28 will be compatible with those holsters for an added bonus. Additionally, the smaller size makes it an ideal concealed carry pistol able to fit in smaller holsters.

The 10-round G28 magazines are said to have fencing on the rear of them for a tactile option to help it differentiate between those and then larger caliber 9mm counterparts without looking. Initial reporting states that the .380 ACP Glock 28 is super fun to shoot and is extremely accurate with the right ammunition. Think personal protection loads.

The Glock 28 is said to be available in limited numbers with a supply happening over the next few months to the TALO distribution network. No set word on pricing for the G28 just yet, but it is rumored to have an MSRP of around $500

XTech Tactical MXT 365 Magazine Extension for Sig P365: Ergonomic and Reliable

XTech Tactical, an aftermarket manufacturer of firearm accessories, has expanded its MTX line of products to include a 3-round extension for the Sig Sauer P365 10-round magazines with the MTX 365. The aftermarket extension makes the 9mm 10-round magazines into 13-round magazines while providing additional space for a better grip.

XTech Tactical has expanded its MTX family of products to include a 3-round magazine extension for the Sig Sauer P365 9mm pistol. This durable magazine extension takes the 10-round magazine to a 13-rounder and includes a 17-7 stainless steel spring for flawless function. The exterior of the extension matches the aesthetics of the P365 nicely while giving the shooter extra grip space. [Photo credit: XTech Tactical]

Joining the MTX line that includes options for certain Smith & Wesson 9mm pistols and Heckler & Koch VP9 and VP9sk, the MTX 365 allows the user to easily maintain a complete grip on the firearms with a full purchase of the palm. Since its release in 2018, the Sig Sauer P365 9mm pistol has been extremely popular in the micro-compact pistol market making it the most modular concealed carry platform out there. But with the micro compact sizing, a good grip and extra rounds have been a challenge for users.

“We set out to solve a problem no one else has in making a multi-round magazine extension for the P365. While extending the magazine capacity is one element, there was no solution that allows the shooter to maintain an ideal grip while using the standard P365-sized frame. When the user desires to shrink the platform down, they can now simply swap out their magazine versus swapping their pistol frame. We have no doubt that the market will find our newest extender to be the ideal option on the market for the standard P365 frame” stated Jeremy Deadman, Director of Sales and Marketing for XTech Tactical.

The MTX 365 extender has a patented design that has inward-facing tabs that other tabs lack. It includes an extended 17-7 stainless steel spring for reliable function, while the overall aesthetics of the piece match the P365 frame. The MTX 365 also features the functional texture on the side panels for quick and easy extraction when necessary, according to XTech Tactical. The company also states that the MTX 365 has flawless function and will hold open the slide after the last round.

The XTech Tactical MTX 365 is said to be very durable since it is constructed with high-impact glass-filled Nylon 6. The 100% made-in-America magazine extension is available in black and has an MSRP of $19.95. The end-user is responsible for following all local laws, but the company will not ship the product to states where it is unlawful to possess it.

Multitasker Gen3 Mag Pod Baseplate: Lightweight Stabilizer

Multitasker, a company that supplies some of the best weapon-geared multitools, has upgraded its offerings to include a monopod baseplate compatible with Gen M3 PMAG, called the Gen3 Mag Pod. The Gen3 Mag Pod attaches to the bottom of the Magpul Industries magazines to create a monopod.

The Mag Pod monopod baseplate replaces the stock PMAG baseplate and offers additional stability for the magazine in a prone position. The design of the Mag Pod shows off Multitasker’s signature “forward bias” geometry with a wide and stable point of contact at the front edge of the PMAG. This is different from other options in that it doesn’t rely on balancing the mag on the back edge to stabilize the weapon.

Multitasker has released the Gen3 Mag Pod baseplate that is compatible with PMAGs. The Mag Pods replace the factory baseplate and add less than an ounce of overall weight. The Mag Pods give the shooter a stable point to rest the weapon on in the prone shooting position.[Photo credit: Multitasker]

According to Multitasker, the Mag Pod works effectively regardless of whether the shooting surface is level or not. The Mag Pod basepad is an over-molded Thermo Plastic Elastomer (TPE) that provides traction on hard or slick surfaces. The distinctive arched back includes a storage slot for Multitasker’s NANO/NANO2 micro-size optic tools. These items can be removed by using a 5.56 bullet to push the tool out. It gives the user a built-in storage option to secure the NANO tool on the primary magazine.

The Gen3 Mag Pod also provides the shooter with an extended forward section to grip the magazine to help with predictable reloads. The basepad features rear feet that are contoured to work exceptionally well with magazine pouches that utilize bungee retaining tabs. The Mag Pod weighs less than one ounce, so it does not add excessive weight to the system, whereas a bipod can add weight the shooter doesn’t need.

Since the Mag Pod replaces the factory magazine baseplate at 3” by 1.5”, the footprint is minimal along with the light weight. The one-piece design requires no manipulation before use and is intuitive to use, even for novices. The Multitasker Gen3 Mag Pod comes in sets of three and is available in either black or coyote tan. The Mag Pod has an MSRP of $27.95.
