Faxon Firearms’ New 8.6 BLK Barrels

It’s always exciting when a new caliber comes around, seeing how it will shake out. Will it be the next best thing, a niche product for specific situations, or just come and go with time. We’re getting to witness the birth of a new caliber in the 8.6 Blackout, the “Big Brother” to 300 BLK, and Faxon Firearms is leading the charge on its adoption. So, in conjunction with Q, Faxon Firearms is building the very first set of barrels for the 8.6 BLK barrels for Remington 700 and AR10 platforms. Here’s a little of what they had to say about this new endeavor.

“Faxon Firearms has collaborated with Q to build the highest quality 8.6 BLK barrels for Remington 700 and AR10 platforms.”

It should come as no surprise that Faxon Firearms is developing barrels compatible with the new 8.6 Blackout ammunition. After all, the Ohio-based manufacturer has always been at the forefront of barrel development.

Now they’ve combined Faxon Firearms barrel expertise with the science and innovation of Q to come up with an extraordinary and formidable package.

Here is everything you need to know about the new 8.6 Blackout round, how it compares to 300 Blackout, and the radical new barrel design by Faxon Firearms.

What is 8.6 Blackout?

The 8.6 BLK round was imagined and developed by Q. Like the 300 Blackout, the 8.6 Blackout was designed primarily for suppressed shooting, but there are supersonic loads in development as well.

8.6 Blackout cartridges
The easiest thing to do might be to imagine 8.6 BLK as the 300 BLK’s big brother. However, it is far more than just a simple upgrade.

8.6 BLK Features

  • Fits AR-10 Sized Rifles
  • 338 Subsonic Load Based around the 300 grain Sierra Match King
  • Similar to 338 Federal; however, the case was shortened to work reliably with gas guns without modification to mags.
  • Uses Standard 308 Mags
  • Low-Pressure Cartridge
  • Utilizes a shortened 6.5 Creedmoor case for the use of subsonic and high BC projectiles
  • Current Ammo Companies in Development: Gorilla, Hornady, Black Hills, and Discreet Ballistics
  • Designed Around a 12″ barrel

Faxon Firearms has previously shown several 8.6 Blackout loads with a 300-grain bullet and a 210 grain Barnes TTSX bullet. Unfortunately, these loads are still in development but should become commercially available in the foreseeable future.

How is Faxon Firearms Involved?

Faxon Firearms has been privileged to work with Q on developing the best possible barrels to support this revolutionary new round. The team at Faxon Firearms is in the development of their own 8.6 BLK barrels for both the AR-10 and Remington model 700 platforms.

Faxon Barrels for the 8.6 BLK

Faxon Firearms will be offering 1:3 twist barrels chambered in 8.6 Blackout for Remington 700 platforms and AR-10 pattern rifles.

8.6 blk cartridges in packages and loaded into magazines
The barrels for both platforms will be available in 8″, 12″, and 16″ length options.

Faxon Firearms 8.6 BLK barrel Details

  • 1:3 twist rate
  • Better stabilization on long and heavy subsonic rounds
  • Better expansion of the projectiles
  • Re-allocates the energy from the sound and flash to the rotation of the bullet
  • .875 gas block journal for AR10
  • DPMS Gen 1 Pattern

Remage style barrels from Faxon will use a Remage style nut with a standard AR-15 armorers castle nut wrench. The nut is included.

Why is the 1:3 Twist Rate Important?

Faxon Firearms is manufacturing the barrels for these 8.6 Blackout loads. To properly stabilize the long and heavy 300-grain subsonic projectiles, the 8.6 blackout barrels must have a 1:3 twist rate. That means the round is making one full rotation every three inches of barrel length. This helps the 8.6 caliber cartridge re-imagine energy on target.

Faxon Firearms 8.6 BLK
“These barrels are not by any means your standard rifle barrel. Designing and manufacturing them can be challenging, but Faxon Firearms has confidently stepped up to the plate.”

Faxon Firearms’ Barrels are slated to launch around late June or early July of 2022. The ammunition will also launch right around the same time. For more information on the 8.6 blackout project and to be notified about the availability of Faxon barrels, proceed to the Faxon Firearms 8.6 BLK page on our website. It is dedicated to the Q collaboration.

Kit Badger Reviews the Sig Sauer P365XL

When you’re looking for a carry gun, odds are good you’re hoping for one that’s fairly compact, easy to conceal, and has above-average magazine capacity. That means you’ll probably hear about the Sig Sauer P365XL somewhere along the way, and we’re here to help with your P365XL-related questions. In this video review, Ivan of Kit Badger reviews the P365XL after carrying the gun for about a year and using it in classes at various places, including Thunder Ranch. Read on to find out what features the gun has and what Kit Badger thinks of its performance.

What are Some Sig P365XL Features?

This pistol is the slightly-bigger-brother version of the original P365. At 20.7 ounces, empty, it’s still pretty lightweight, and it delivers solid capacity at 10 +1 or 12 +1 depending on the magazine (you can also get 15 and 20-round aftermarket magazines). The model Ivan of Kit Badger reviewed was the version that ships with a Sig Romeo Zero red dot sight (RDS) which is a nice option from the manufacturer. RDS have become increasingly popular and having your carry gun shipped with a reliable model already mounted to the gun makes the entire process simpler.

The P365XL has an overall height of 4.8-inches without an optic, an overall length of 6.6 inches, and a width of 1.1 inches. Its barrel is made from carbon steel and is 3.7-inches long. This is a micro-compact pistol chambered in 9x19mm designed specifically for concealed carry.

Check out the Kit Badger video for more from Ivan about the Sig P365XL.

How Does the P365XL Perform?

Ivan shares some thoughts on the overall performance of the P365XL, saying, “Honestly, this pistol can outshoot me.”

He goes on to say that the magazines are one of the cooler features. “You have to have this…hybrid double-single-stack to where you can get a flush fit 12-round magazine or the extended 15, and at the same time you have a pistol that is incredibly narrow. …from a concealability standpoint, you have something really small.” Je also notes that similar to the P320s, you can basically configure the P365XL how you want. “Tons of options with this pistol.”

This gun is popular for good reason. A few of those reasons include:

  • Micro-compact size
  • Good defensive caliber
  • Reliability
  • Accuracy

The SIG P365XL is chambered in 9x19mm which is currently the most popular defensive caliber on the market. Is 9mm your personal favorite or do you prefer a carry gun in a different caliber? Let us know in the comments below.

Sig Sauer Announces New P322 Pistol

Sig Sauer officially announced the P322, the all-new, U.S. designed and manufactured 22 rimfire pistol. The P322 offers an unprecedented 21 round capacity, is optics ready, and suppressor-ready right out of the box, all at a reportedly affordable price point.

Sig Sauer recently announced their brand new, designed from the ground up, P322 .22lr pistol. This pistol is a brand-new platform and not adapted from an existing platform.

“When SIG SAUER enters a new product category, we do it because we have exciting innovation to offer the consumer – the P322 combines ingenuity, quality, and value for a fun, low-cost plinking experience,” said Tom Taylor, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President, Commercial Sales, Sig Sauer Inc. “The 20+1 round capacity is an industry leader among compact 22 pistols, which means less time loading and more fun shooting on the range. The P322 stainless-steel frame and polymer grip was ergonomically designed for comfort to fit all hand sizes and is completely ambidextrous. Another shooter-focused feature is a modular trigger that allows the P322 to be configured with a flat or curved trigger shoe. This only scratches the surfaces of innovation that we have packed into the P322 and is just a few of the 21 reasons to love the P322.”

The new Sig Sauer P322 was completely designed from the ground up at Sig and is a brand new platform. It features a stainless-steel frame and a polymer grip with a 1913 rail and integrated magwell. The P322 reportedly can fit a wide array of hand sizes, which is good as the grip is not modular.

P322 accessories
The Sig P322 includes many extras in the box from the factory. Some of these additional items include two 20-round magazines, a thread adapter for accepting a suppressor, and a curved trigger shoe.

Additionally, the Sig P322 features an alloy slide that is optic ready with fiber optic front and rear sights that are fully adjustable offering a crisp and easy-to-see sight picture. If iron sights aren’t your thing, you can swap those out for a long list of sights, including the new ROMEOZero Elite from Sig. Also on the slide are front and rear cocking serrations to ensure effortless slide manipulation.

That includes a thread adapter for shooting the pistol suppressed, as well as an unprecedented two 20 round magazines, with 25 round magazines available for purchase. Also in the box is a magazine loader to assist in loading those 20 rounds.

New: Ruger 10/22 Heat Shield from Samson Manufacturing

The Ruger 10/22 has been a popular platform since it first hit the market more than 50 years ago. Since those early days, technology has advanced, and with it there have been a number of updates and aftermarket options made available for it. The latest comes from Samson Manufacturing in the form of the B-TM Heat Shield.

The B-TM Heat Shield is an aftermarket product designed to protect the hands of shooters from the heat of the barrel of a Ruger 10/22. Because the uppermost portion of the barrel is exposed, it is possible to accidentally burn your hands during high round count shooting exercises. Use of the new Heat Shield prevents such possible injuries. In addition, the B-TM Heat Shield provides some protection for the barrel itself, guarding it against the scratches and scrapes that are so common at the range and in the field.

It is important to note this shield is made specifically for the Ruger 10/22 factory carbine barrel, meaning it will not fit the Ruger 10/22 Takedown.

Samson Strategic Sales Manager Chris Sullivan had the following to say regarding the company’s latest product: “The new Heat Shield is another exciting addition to our growing array of Samson-branded accessories for the legendary Ruger 10/22. Owners of that rifle can really trick out their firearm with items from our line. Many shooters start with our iconic B-TM Folding Stock – which is now available in black oxide as well as the original stainless steel finish – and add the B-TM Sight Package, B-TM Flash Hider and/or B-TM Barrel Band.”

According to the manufacturer, the shield was created to give the Ruger 10/22 a tactical edge with a practice purpose. When the B-TM Heat Shield is mounted to your carbine in place of the factory shield, it gives the gun the appearance of a Mini-14. And thanks to it being made from black injection-molded, glass-filled polymer designed for longevity and hard use as well as ergonomics. Even better, Samson Manufacturing states it’s quick and easy to install, requiring no gunsmith and no screws.

  • Designed for compatibility with the Ruger 10/22 Carbine
  • Similar appearance to the Ruger Mini-14 factory heat shield
  • Replaces the factory heat shield
  • Dual purpose: Both aesthetically appealing and functional because it protects the shooter’s hands from the heat of the barrel
  • Installation requires the removal of the dovetailed rear sight
  • Manufactured from a durable black injection molded glass-filled polymer

  • Manufacturer: Samson Manufacturing
  • Model: B-TM Heat Shield

How to Use an AK | Lucky Gunner Ammo

For all intents and purposes, an AK is a pretty easy gun to learn to operate. Chris Baker, from Lucky Gunner, says as much on his Shooting 101 video about the AK. If you’re new to shooting, or recently purchased an AK, you might find yourself needing a little guidance or a refresher on the basics like safely loading, unloading, aiming, and firing an AK-type rifle.

Chris Baker, of LuckyGunner.com, got a lot of requests for him to include the AK in his Shooting 101 series. Whether you’re new to AKs or need a refresher, he covers the basics to get you going in the right direction.

According to Chris, the AK is simple and straightforward to operate, but people might need some help to get started the right way. He stresses that there are different methods for what he does in the video and different people have different techniques, but he wants to show the basics of holding and operating the firearm safely.

Chris states that the word safe is a relative word. Anything with firearms is inherently dangerous and anytime we touch firearms we are dealing with life-or-death decisions. We can reduce the risk by following the four rules for safe gun handling:

  1. Treat all guns the same way you would treat a loaded gun.
  2. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
  3. Keep your finger away from the trigger until you’re ready to shoot. Anytime you are not actively shooting the firearm, your finger needs to be straight and glued to the side of the receiver.
  4. Know what you are shooting at, what is behind it, and around it.

In handling an AK, or any gun really, the first thing you’re going to do is to unload and clear the weapon.

How to Clear an AK

Chris clearing AK
Chris talks you through the steps to safely and properly clear an AK by removing the magazine, opening the action to eject any rounds inside, and visually inspecting that the chamber is clear.
  • Pick it up with your dominant hand and tuck the stock up in your armpit for support.
  • Remove the magazine by pressing the release paddle and pulling the magazine forward and down.
  • Set the mag aside, take the gun off safe, and open the action (the action won’t open if the safety is on).
  • Pull the charging handle to the rear. If there is a round in the chamber it will eject.
  • Hold the action open (there is no hold-open feature on an AK) and visually inspect the chamber is clear.
  • Slowly ride the handle forward back into place.
  • Put the safety back on.

How to Load an AK

Lucky Gunner loading AK
Next Chris walks through the steps to properly load the AK by loading ammunition into the magazine and lining up the magazine so that the lip engages before rotating the mag up and into place.
  • Put the rifle down with the barrel facing in a safe direction.
  • Load the magazine by holding it in your non-dominant hand and insert the rounds one at a time into the magazine. A standard magazine will hold 30 rounds. You won’t be able to overload the magazine.
  • Insert the magazine into the AK, which can be tricky if you aren’t familiar with it. There is a lip in front of the mag that needs to be inserted first before it will go in.
  • Angle the magazine so that the bottom is facing the same way as the muzzle and rotate the mag back and up into place.
  • Give the magazine a little tug to make sure that it is locked into place.
  • While the gun is loaded, it won’t fire yet. Pick the gun back up with the stock into your armpit.
  • Move the safety to the fire position and pull the charging handle sharply to the rear and let it go, letting it ride its own way forward.

At this point, if you pulled the trigger, the AK would fire.  Chris is fast to point out that you don’t ever want to just rely on the safety function of the rifle. You need to follow the four rules he laid out earlier in the video. He reiterates that you need to keep the weapon pointed in a safe direction and your finger away from the trigger.

Proper Shooting stance
Chris describes the proper shooting stance, also known as the athletic stance. This stance gives you the support you need to fire the weapon and keep control of it as well.

How to Fire an AK

  • You need to get your body into the proper stance, also known as the athletic stance. You achieve this with your dominant foot slightly behind the support side with your shoulders squared to the target, bending forward at the waist, and slightly bending your dominant knee while keeping your dominant hand is high up on the grip as you can.
  • Place the stock of the weapon in the hollow of your shoulder, near the edge of the pectoral muscle, with your elbow pointed towards the ground with your non-dominant hand on the handguard and not the magazine.
  • Pivot the gun towards the ground in front of the target putting you in a low-ready position. This is the position you will default to when you aren’t ready to shoot.
  • When you are ready to shoot, you will rotate the gun up to your eye level and disengage the safety with your dominant hand. Some people may want to change out the safety paddle for a larger aftermarket option.
  • As you raise the gun, get your cheek as firmly against the buttstock as is comfortable. You can move your face towards the gun to get into the line-of-sight position. You do not want to lean your head to one side to get into sight position.
  • Line your fixed sights on the weapon with the target. The notch and the top of the front post should be even. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to hold truly still in a standing position.
  • With the weapon to your shoulder and the sights all lined up with the safety off, you can move your finger to the trigger and pull it to the rear with steady and even pressure.
  • After the shot is fired, the bolt will go to the rear of the weapon, the spent shell casing will eject from the port and a new round will be loaded into the chamber.
Lucky Gunner shooting AK
He finishes the video with a live-fire demonstration of all the steps he discussed in the video, including how to shoulder the rifle and fire it.

When you are finished shooting, or you are out of ammunition, you will:

  • Remove your finger from the trigger
  • Re-engage the safety
  • Go back to the low-ready body position.

Watch it for yourself!

New: Sig P320 Grip Module from Mirzon

The Sig Sauer P320 is perhaps the most popular full-sized handgun from the gun maker. It’s been on the market since 2014, and in almost a decade of use it’s not only maintained but gained widespread use. Considering how many competition shooters and self-defense gun owners use the Sig P320 regularly, it comes as no surprise there are also a lot of aftermarket options available for it. Now there’s one more, a new grip module, coming from Mirzon.

One of the great things about the SIG P320 is its modularity. This new grip allows shooters to customize their handguns further. (Photo credit: Mirzon)

The new grip module from Mirzon is made from polymer and has numerous features designed to increase the shooter’s comfort while improving accuracy. Forward, angled slide serrations provide an indexing reference, and a lower beavertail facilitates a more secure, while still suitably high, grip. This enhances control and accuracy. Uniquely designed finger channels are subtle enough to fit a wide variety of hand sizes and serve to make the module ergonomically correct and comfortable.

New: Sauer SL5 Turkey Shotgun

Spring turkey season is upon us, and that means checking out new shotguns. Enter Sauer USA with its timely launch of the new SL5 series turkey shotguns. These guns are fine-tuned for chasing thunder chickens, but they remain the same reliable, quality firearms as the original SL5 models. And of course, the Sauer USA brand is part of J.P. Sauer and Sohn, a gun maker known as the oldest hunting firearms manufacturer in Germany. They have quite a reputation backing them.

According to the manufacturer, these new additions to their existing SL5 line are meant for hardcore turkey hunters. They are semi-automatic shotguns chambered in 12-gauge and designed to run with either 2 ¾ or 3-inch shells. The guns also have 18.5-inch deep-drilled, chrome-lined barrels with stepped ribs for precise alignment. Black anodized receivers, which will help reduce glare and increase concealment during a hunt, come standard on all SL5 Turkey Shotguns. A camo composite stock helps conceal the gun from the sharp eyes of turkeys and a pistol grip makes it simpler to maneuver.

Sauer also included a Cervellati recoil pad for greater comfort and sling attachments for portability. The red single-bead LPA front fiber-optic sight facilitates quicker aiming and fast shot placement when seconds matter. Other features include an oversized extended bolt handle and release button for easier operation even while wearing gloves and a removable picatinny rail.

Jason Evans, CEO of the Blaser Group, which imports J.P. Sauer and Sohn firearms, said “We are excited to partner with Mossy Oak to introduce these new high-performance, camo pattern turkey guns in our SL5 series. There is strong demand, and we designed these new shotguns to deliver desired features and consistent reliability at a very competitive price point.”

These shotguns feature Sauer’s Inertia-Driven System which makes cycling smooth and reliable. According to the manufacturer, the Inertia-Driven System also involves fewer working parts for greater longevity and a design that enhances accuracy. The guns are being offered in Mossy Oak Obsession, Mossy Oak Bottomland, and Mossy Oak New Bottomland, so hunters can choose whether to mix or match their own camo.

Sauer states the following about their SL5 Turkey Shotguns and their related warranties: “Made in Italy and backed by a 10-year factory warranty, the SL5 Turkey shotguns weigh 7 pounds, have a 3+1 capacity, and come standard with three chokes – a flush Cylinder, an extended CRIO Plus Modified choke, and a Carlson extended Turkey choke.”

The Sauer SL5 Turkey Shotgun has an MSRP of $1,199.00 and, as mentioned above, ships with a trio of chokes.
