Magpul AR Upgrades – The Mag Life

Magpul continues to announce its new products for 2023, and AR fans will be interested to know that the company has updated its AR platform offerings to include a Wire Control Kit, Enhanced Selector Kit, and the Barricade Stop.

Magpul WCK

The Magpul WCK, or Wire Control Kit, is a way to get fast, secure, and clean management of light and laser wires on the user’s rifle. The system creates a streamlined look for the forend with easy-to-install M-LOK compatible assemblies.

The WCK assembly is a half-slot in size to allow for more precise positioning. The assemblies allow for routing of the cables straight through, at 90 degrees or even 180 degrees, whichever the shooter needs.

The WCK is compatible with metal M-LOK handguards but may not work completely with some polymer ones. There are six assemblies per package and are available in either black or flat dark earth (FDE). The WCK assemblies have a price tag of $19.95.

Enhanced Selector Kit

Magpul ESK

The next upgrade is the Magpul Enhanced Selector Kit or ESK. This modular and ambidextrous selector kit is designed for AR pattern firearms. This allows the user to get the right ergonomic fit without requiring any tools for installation.

Constructed from polymer and corrosion-resistant steel, the kit includes three levers to choose from. Also in the kit is a corrosion-resistant selector axle with 60- and 90-degree options for mounting. The kit comes in black and FDE and has a price tag of $49.95.

Barricade Stop

Last up for the AR upgrades is the Magpul Barricade Stop. The Barricade Stop is an aggressive hand stop with M-LOK that lets the shooter brace up against a barricade as a stable shooting base. The Barricade Stop is constructed from polymer for the body and has a steel insert for better contact with the barricade.

The Barricade Stop has a faceted steel head that allows for pivoting while keeping contact on the shooting surface. Once installed, it can be removed or swapped out if the shooter needs it. It, too, comes in black or FDE and has a price tag of $24.95.

Federal Shotshell: New for 2023

Whether you’re a hunter or prefer shooting clays, there are new shotshells coming in 2023 for you from Federal Premium. The trusted ammunition manufacturer is producing an entire lineup of new shotgun ammo in a wide range of gauges. New offerings include bismuth loads for upland birds, 28 gauge competition loads, and even shotshells designed to produce less potential waste in the field. And if you prefer hunting larger game such as whitetail deer, there’s something for you as well. Read on to learn more.

Federal Premium’s latest shotshell ammunition offerings include products in High Over All, Black Cloud, HEVI-Bismuth, Hi-Bird, and Premium Buckshot product lines. Each line is designed to fulfill a particular niche and is made according to the company’s exacting standards for quality and superior performance.

Premium High Over All in 28 gauge is bound to redefine what a sub-gauge can do. (Photo credit: Federal Premium)

The latest additions to the Premium High Over All line are 28 gauge and 410 bore. This line is engineered to meet the needs and expectations of the most elite trap, skeet, and sporting clay shooters. It’s made using a hard, high-antimony lead payload and wad for consistent patterns. A solid brass head and hull design also makes it easier to reload. According to Federal, Premium High Over All is the ultimate competition load for the world’s greatest shooters.

Black Cloud is adding a 28 gauge load to its proven line. This is the shotshell that effectively altered the definition of performance for steel waterfowl loads more than a decade ago, and it continues to be a favorite among waterfowlers. Today the revolution continues with 28 gauge which Federal states will redefine the capabilities of sub-gauges. Just like with all Black Cloud loads, this one utilizes the FLITECONTROL FLEX wad for better pattern density and consistency whether you’re using a ported or standard waterfowl choke.

Federal Premium HEVI-Bismuth is designed to make your hunt successful. It does this by impacting upland birds and waterfowl with the power of 9.6 g/cc density pellets so you can drop a number of birds in quick succession. This load is sourced from Federal’s affiliate company, HEVI-Shot. Federal states that HEVI Bismuth shot is 22% denser than steel which translates to superior lethal energy delivered downrange. This load is launched by the FLITECONTROL FLEX wad and the bismuth pellets are made to pattern consistently for reliable performance. Pellets are alloyed and cast in the USA.

Another new offering is a 12 gauge, 2 3.4 inch Hi-Bird Fiber Wad. This is a cellulose-based over-powder wad made specifically to minimize plastic left in the field. After all, it’s the responsibility of sportsmen everywhere to take care of the land they hunt. This load is fantastic for the field and also great for preserve hunting situations.

premium buck shot

The company’s new Premium Buckshot 1 buck 12 gauge load is made to deliver stellar precision. This shotshell sends a payload of 16 copper-plated pellets into your target for an ethical, one-shot kill. Premium Buckshot is made to produce impressively tight patterns for better shot placement and is meant to be powerful enough to drop predators and feral hogs, too.

MSRP varies by product.

Matador Arms 9mm MAT-9 Upper Receiver

Want a fully self-contained 9mm upper that is ready to shoot suppressed out of the box? What about a complete 9mm upper that allows you to use your pistol magazines with little or no modifications required to play? Matador Arms has your back with its MAT-9 blowback upper that is also bufferless.

Matador Arms has a complete 9mm upper receiver that is ready to go straight out of the box, including shooting suppressed. (Photo credit: Matador Arms)

The MAT-9 was designed for maximum weight reduction, a slim profile, and compatibility with bolt catches and lower receivers, according to Matador Arms. It is comprised of anodized 6061-T6 aluminum, nitride steel bolt and action parts, and a lightweight 7.825” nitride threaded barrel. The upper is compatible with Last Round Bolt Hold Open, or LRBHO, lower receivers.

The MAT-9 can be configured in two different ways: Native mode and Conversion mode. The Native mode runs with double-stack magazines. In the Conversion mode, the AR-15 lowers require a Mag-X magazine conversion kit to make it work with double-stack magazines. In either mode, the MAT-9 will work with almost all 9mm magazines. The magazine conversion kit is required on some Glock and Sig Sauer models, like the Glock 17, Glock 19, and Sig Sauer P320.

Rear view of MAT-9

According to Matador Arms, the upper is built with a tapered 4-piece trunnion system made from different materials to keep mechanical accuracy and durability. Rounding out some other features for the MAT-9 is a non-reciprocating ambidextrous steel charging handle, NATO 1913 top rail, and M-LOK slots on both sides and bottom.

The Matador Arms MAT-9 is compatible with side-fold buttstocks and has a patent-pending Easy Take-down System (EZTS). The EZTS means that the upper doesn’t require any tools for breaking it down making it easier for maintenance or cleaning.

While there is no word on overall weight or length, that information will probably be readily available after SHOT Show 2023. The MAT-9 complete 9mm upper from Matador Arms is available now with a price tag of $600.

Rossi RP63: Your Next Revolver

In some concealed carry circles, revolvers have been given a bad rap. Due to their limited capacity and the fact that they are, indeed, an older platform, many gun owners don’t see revolvers as their go-to for defensive purposes. Rossi is aiming to change that with their return to the revolver market. For 2023 they’re launching not one but three revolvers: the RP63, RM66, and RM64. Interested? You probably should be.

Rossi is back in the revolver game with a trio of guns set to launch in 2023. (Photo credit: Rossi)

Rossi states they designed these revolvers to bring back the classic, timeless features from the company’s history while including modern manufacturing techniques. These revolvers might have a classic look, but their function is fantastically modern.

RP63

The first revolver to be released by Rossi is the RP63, the gun the company hopes will be your next carry gun. This is a stainless-steel revolver with a 3.0-inch barrel that’s chambered in 357 Magnum, which of course means you can also run 38 Special through it.

Rossi RP63
The 3.0-inch barrel of the RP63 makes it easier to conceal. (Photo credit: Rossi)

The RP63 is a solid option for home defense use but also fits the bill for everyday carry. It features a rounded grip frame to reduce printing when concealed and has a six-round capacity. The factory sights are fixed which is a wise design feature for a carry gun such as this and the front sight is ramped to reduce the risk of snagging on the draw stroke. The firing pin is mounted on the hammer, which is a long-time feature of Rossi revolvers. A match-grade trigger makes the gun a pleasure to shoot and enhances accuracy.

RM66

Next up is the RM66. This is another six-shot revolver, but it has a 6.0-inch barrel. Like the RP63 this gun has a fantastic trigger. However, the RM66 has adjustable sights.

This is a revolver created by Rossi to be ideal for range day, ranch work, or revolver competition shooting. Hunting is something else this gun is likely to excel at. It’s also a 357 Magnum, and thanks to its barrel length and overall design, it’ll give you good ballistic results. This gun is also made with stainless steel but it has a square butt configuration for the purpose of making it easier to run with full-power magnums.

RM64

Later in 2023, Rossi will launch their 4.0 inch “do everything” revolver, the RM64. This 4-inch medium-frame revolver chambered in 357 Magnum is right in the sweet spot for size, making it an optimal choice for a multi-purpose gun.

Rossi RM66

The RM64 will be great for concealed carry, field use, hunting, home defense, or even shooting IDPA. It, too, has a match-grade trigger and the same adjustable sights as the larger RM66.

MSRP for the Rossi RP63 is set at $460.99. The RM66 has an MSRP of $620.99 and the RM64 price is not yet known.

Magpul DAKA Hard Case & GRID Organizers

Magpul is announcing its new products for 2023 and they started out with storage and transport solutions you’ll want to see. Hard case users have long lamented the supplied inserts, so Magpul has finally applied its touch to the subject by expanding its DAKA line to include hard cases and GRID organizer inserts.

The DAKA hard cases are designed to address many of the issues that users experienced with typical hard cases, giving the market a stronger, more reliable option. The DAKA GRID inserts are drop-in replacements for foam inserts that allow the user to customize the interior of their case.

Magpul DAKA Hard Case

The hard case is constructed from injected molding that uses gas-charged polypropylene. This material helps reduce the weight while giving the case better strength capabilities and enhancing the overall integrity when compared to other hard cases. Plus, the case also has extra storage space in the double-walled corner pockets, adding impact resistance and a place to put smaller items inside the case.

The DAKA hard case is available in three sizes and comes with an intuitive DAKA Organizer system. The case is a huge step forward for hard cases and addresses many of the issues that folks have with other cases on the market. (Photo credit: Magpul)

The latch design is another step forward with large, easily operated push-button releases. When pressed, the latch opens and remains in the open position so it can be used as a handle as well. The latch can be closed with a simple downward motion anywhere on the latch body complete with a click that is easily heard. Also on the latches are standard lock pass-through holes that keep the case shut when locked. Magpul took it one step further by creating a lock recess that will house the lock, with the aid of a zip tie, to keep the lock secure and away from snag points.

The DAKA hard case is available in three different-sized models and will accept most shotguns and long rifles. The DAKA hard cases start around $300 and go up to $369 for the biggest case with the GRID organizer included.

DAKA GRID Inserts

The DAKA inserts for the hard case are another push forward in firearm storage. The GRID insert replaces foam inserts in one swoop, even working in Pelican V800 and V730 cases. This drop-in GRIP and block make it so the end user can fully customize the interior of their case to fit whatever needs they have that day.

Magpul DAKA GRID Organizer blocks
The GRID Organizer system from Magpul is a bit like playing with grown-up Legos with organization inside a hard case. The pieces are completely adjustable and won’t wear down like the foam inserts. (Photo credit: Magpul)

The Expanded Polypropylene Panels (EPP) of the GRID organizer fit securely together to allow the user to customize the interior to organize, brace, and secure rifles, optics, ammunition, and other accessories or gear. The GRID is adjustable, meaning the user can change the interior from one moment to the next, depending on what they are carrying which doesn’t require any tools for changing it up.

DAKA GRID Organization
Magpul has expanded its DAKA line-up to include a hard case and GRID organizer, all made in the USA. GRID Organizer is shown inside a Pelican case. (Photo credit: Magpul)

Unlike traditional foam inserts, the GRID allows the user to reuse the inserts time and again without any permanent damage or changes. The EPP is resistant to chemical intrusion and damage so cleaning the interior, should the need arise, is simple. The best part is the DAKA GRID doesn’t degrade like foam and will keep the user’s gear safe and secure time after time.

The DAKA GRID organizer is available for the two Pelican models in addition to extra GRID blocks for purchase as a stand-alone, with more designs on the way.

FN 510 Tactical Series & FN 545 Tactical Series Pistols

FN America, LLC, banking on the popularity of the FN 509 Tactical, has upgraded its offerings in the Tactical line to include a 10mm option as well as a .45 ACP option. The FN 510 and the FN 545 pistols have threaded barrels for muzzle devices, optic cuts for red dots, and suppressor-height night sights.

The FN 510 Tactical pistol is a part of the upgraded Tactical line of pistols from FN America. Chambered in 10mm, a popular defense round, the pistol has the same styling as the 509 Series pistols and two magazines from the factory. (Photo credit: FN America)

The two pistols carry the industry-first capacity, according to FN, with standard 15-round and 22+1-round magazines for the FN 510 Tactical and 18+1-round extended magazines for the FN 545. These pistols are chambered in two very popular full-bore personal defense calibers, but the packages are not much larger than the original FN 509 pistol, making them easy to conceal and comfortable to shoot.

“There has been significant interest from FN owners in pistols chambered in big bore calibers over the last several years,” said Chris Cole, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for FN America, LLC. “We are excited to announce the release of the FN 510 Tactical and 545 Tactical pistols, chambered in 10mm and.45 ACP, that advance our flagship striker-fired line of pistols and complement our FNX-45 Tactical and FN 509 Tactical.”

True to FN 509 family’s styling, these additions have enhanced grip texturing, changeable backstraps, and slide serrations. Both heavy-duty defensive pistols weigh just over 30 ounces (32 and 31 ounces respectively) and feature a double-action system with a roughly 6-lb trigger pull weight.

“We pioneered the Tactical feature set in the FNX-45 and FN 509 Tactical pistols, introducing the industry’s first pistol that shipped from the factory with a threaded barrel, optics mount and extended capacity, and until now, the FNX-45 Tactical had the highest capacity of any .45 ACP pistol available from the factory,” said Chris Johnson, Senior Product Manager, Pistols, for FN America, LLC. “This expansion into new, big bore calibers has been a long time in the making and we are excited to offer these pistols with this unprecedented capacity – 18+1 in the FN 545 Tactical and 22+1 in the FN 510 Tactical – along with the features our customers seek in an FN Tactical pistol.”

FN 545 Tactical Series pistol
The other updated member of the Tactical series pistols is the FN 545 Tactical Series. This pistol is chambered in .45 ACP and has suppressor-height sights with tritium inserts. Weighing just 31 ounces, the pistol is a solid contender as a concealed carry weapon. (Photo: FN America)

The FN 510 Series as well as the FN 545 Series pistols come with the patented Low-Profile Optics Mounting System that is compatible with every major optics footprint, meaning end users can use almost any red dot optic on the market for their pistol. Additionally, the pistols boast suppressor-height sights with tritium inserts, giving the pistols viable backup sights.

Both pistols feature 4.7-inch cold hammer-forged barrels that have been threaded 0.578”x28 that are compatible with most all muzzle devices or suppressors. Available in either black or flat dark earth (FDE) and come with two magazines (15-round and 22+1 for the FN 510, and 18+1 for the FN 545). The FN 510 Tactical and the FN 545 Tactical pistol have an MSRP of $1,139.
